Khao Lak--Care and Simon's Engagement Present!

Our next island hop (not quite an island as it's on the mainland but still beautiful beaches) on the Andaman Coast was Khao Lak where a friend of Des's from his Dive Master's course has opened up a dive shop "Wicked Diving." It is a lovely little town that was one of the worst places affected by the 2004 tsunami and as a result everything is incredibly well built and new looking now.

Rubber-tree forest--the little black dishes hanging on the trees catch the rubber

A lovely combination

We were blessed with fabulous weather there as well and spent the days playing beach tennis, swimming and beach combing the beautiful long beach. We went to an amazing day market that sold all sorts of incredible street food and goods and we went rented a scooter and drove out to the National Park where we hiked through a nature trail in the luscious rain forest and jumped off rocks into the sea. We also trekked out to a gorgeous waterfall and dipped our toes in the fresh water then went to a Thai orchid garden and butterfly garden and walked through the rubber trees where little black dishes hang off the trees to catch the rubber. We had some delicious meals including one of my favorites--a pineapple and peppercorn tuna steak.

The last 3 days of our time in Khao Lak were the biggest treat ever! Care and Simon bought us 2 nights in a luxurious resort as an engagement present which we have been saving for just the right time! It was an absolutely amazing place and time. Des and I have been on the road for over 5 months staying in the cheapest guest-houses, coco-huts and rooms we could find and it was so nice to be able to stay somewhere that we would never be able justify treating ourselves to! We got picked up at the cheap guest-house we were staying at by a luxurious air-conditioned vehicle first thing in the morning and taken to paradise.

The other glorious pool

Our room was a private bungalow right on the beach that overlooked the turquoise water--what a view to wake up to! The resort had 2 pools, a pool-side bar, a spa and a restaurant that served the most amazing buffet breakfasts. Our room had a jacuzzi (SUCH a luxury as I have not been able to have a bath in over a year between our house-share in Ireland and half a year on the road!) We had a massage at the spa and went for walks along the beach where we saw the most beautiful sunsets I have ever laid eyes on. We are now journeying on the last leg of our travels feeing refreshed and rejuvenated...Thank-you so much Care and Simon...you don't know how much it meant to us--we feel spoiled rotten! You are the best!!!!! x x
